Established
in 1898, Elgin is located on highway #23 and it is
16 kms west of highway #10.
Situated
in the middle of a thriving agricultural area.

Whitewater Centennial Park
Located
one mile east of Elgin on highway 23.
Whitewater Centennial Park is a municipal park built in April of
1982.
The
lake is a man made body of water about two miles long and has pike, pickerel
and perch, making it a popular fishing destination.
Eighteen
camp sites are equipped with hydro, or pitch a tent on one of the many un-serviced
sites. A campground host is on site to
help with any needs.
Great
family fun can be found on the nine hole golf course over looking the lake.
Kids
and adults can enjoy the sandy beach with a playground alongside, or stroll
over to pet the miniature goats who are always entertaining.
Washroom
facilities are available and are wheelchair accessible. There is also a clubhouse, which can be used

renovated in 2008.
Seating
capacity of 250 unlicensed and 207 licensed.
The kitchen is fully equipped with large and small appliances, dishes
and cutlery. The bar has liquor
dispensers, glasses, bar fridge and freezer.
There
are two regular washrooms and one wheelchair accessible washroom.
We
have a raised platform stage with piano, p.a. system, overhead projection
screen and large dance floor.
We
are a volunteer based group with an executive committee and members at
large. We rent our hall for meetings,
teas, church services, funerals, wedding receptions, smorgs, elections, dances,
craft sales, and family reunions.

United
Church
The
Elgin United Church located on Peterborough Ave was built in 1906 as Grace
Methodist. In 1921 the congregations of
Grace Methodist and Knox Presbyterian United and became Elgin United Church.
At
the present time Elgin and Souris form a pastoral charge with service
in Elgin at 9:30 a.m. from September to June. The Sunday School welcomes children of all
ages.
The
United Church women meet once a month for
fellowship and to arrange for fundraising to support the church and Mission and Service; and foster a child in Ethiopia; Samaritan House as well as other
charities. They also serve food at
funerals in the church and keep the church building clean.
The
church welcomes everyone.
Elgin and District Historical Museum Inc.
Visit
the Elgin Museum, housed in the 1903 Canadian Bank of Commerce Building on Main Street, highway 23.
There
you will find the Military Memorial, a large collection of military pictures,
uniforms and artifacts from World War I and II, as well as information of
service men and women from the district.
Inside
the museum you will find; aboriginal display, period clothing, early 1900’s
home setting, sports uniforms, school display, history book from many
districts, artifacts from former Elgin businesses, extensive photo display,
minute and record books from many organizations and an indexed collection of
clippings from Elgin Newspapers 1900-1931.
Stoll
the grounds around the museum, there you will find a replica sod house, a 1948
snowplane, working windmill, collection of vintage from machinery, tools and
railway artifacts.
The
museum is open every weekend in July and August or by appointment.
Elgin Cemetery
The
Elgin Cemetery was established in 1903.
An
alphabetical list and map are located at the cemetery entrance.
Elgin Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund
In
1998 the R.M. of Whitewater passed a by-law to establish a “Perpetual Care
Fund” for the upkeep and care of the Elgin Cemetery.
Donations made to the perpetual care fund are administered by the R.M.
of Whitewater. Interest from this investment is used in maintenance of the
cemetery. This fund is the main source
of income for the care of our cemetery.

Education
Elgin is located in the Southwest Horizon
School Division. Children in Elgin have the unique choice of attending
either Hartney or Souris schools. Both are modern up to date schools with great
after school sports activities. Check

Elgin
Investors Group
In
1990 approximately 100 people from the community formed the Elgin Investors
Group by pooling their money together they were able to purchase the land and
building at 127 Main Street, thus ensuring that Elgin has a gather place and
store.
Over
the years many people have rented their building, currently their building
houses a restaurant, postal services, groceries, gas and liquor vendor.
Elgin Community Rink
Curling,
skating and hockey have always been a highlight of the winter.
New
skating and curling rinks were built during the sixties. The natural ice is put in December and
usually lasts until late March.
A
curling bonspiel is held once a year in January and is open to all ages. There are full kitchen facilities where
curlers can enjoy a hot meal prepared by the local ladies.

Elgin and Area Lions Club
The
Lions meet every third Wednesday of each month at the local eatery.
The
Elgin and Area Lions Club celebrated their
25th anniversary in the fall of 2009.
The
Lions established a recycling depot in Elgin 15 years ago. Products being recycled are paper, cardboard,
plastics and metals. Glass is collected
and crushed. The glass is available to
the general public who use it for many applications including around buildings
and granaries for rodent control, filling pot holes, and putting around
trees.
The
Elgin and Area Lions Club has kept 9100 kg
of garbage out of the local landfill in 2008.
The
Lions also collect car batteries and used eyeglasses. The eyeglasses are then sent to third world
countries.
Recreational
Improvement Committee of Elgin (R.I.C.E)
With
the growing population of young families with children moving to Elgin, a need was seen for a new
playground. R.I.C.E. is currently
fundraising for the new equipment.
The
new playground is currently in the process of being built and will give our
children a safe place to play.
Elgin Fire Department
The
Elgin Fire Department consists of 13 volunteer firemen, 5 of which are Level 1
firefighters. All of the firemen have
First Aid and CPR knowledge and are trained in modern day firefighting.
The
fire truck holds 500 gallons of water as well as all their tools and breathing
apparatuses. Extra water trucks are at
their disposal when needed.
Elgin Community Fund
The
Elgin Community Fund was formed in 1999.
All finances are administered by the Brandon and Area Foundation. The Elgin Fund committee decides where the
available funds are to be allocated within our community each year. Any organization can apply for said funds by
filling out an application form before the end of September on the following
website, www.bacf.ca. Cards are available at the Elgin store or museum for anyone wishing to
make a donation to the fund or in memory of someone. All donations are gratefully accepted.
Elgin Bridal Shower Committee
The
Elgin Bridal Shower Committee was started in 2005. A committee of six volunteer to hold a
fund-raiser in order to have some funds available for expenses of upcoming
bridal showers. This committee is
responsible for getting a group together to convene a shower.
Fairfax
Established
in 1899, Fairfax is located on highway 23, 5 miles west of highway 23, 5 miles
west of highway 10 and .5 mile south on paved P.R. 444.
